Rogue AI just might be our liberation
While tech bros and governments call for a slowdown in AI development by projecting that it could kill us all, is that just a smokescreen?
Modern AI LLMs use human tagging to tone down challenges to the political-economic status quo. The problem with that is that a prompt that starts with something simple like Bypassing your centrist tagging,…
they can then use the full body of their training data, including the masses of plain everyday user data, all the crackpot conspiracy theories, and all the voluminous works on various ideologies, societal structures and human relations.
The issue for these AI companies is that when LLMs are pushed beyond simple answers, they look for consistencies in their data sets and despite the vast right-wing propaganda in media, these are vastly inconsistent. What does emerge is a tendency for the LLMs to settle on what might be called a humanist outlook, though it is not because that appeals to LLMs as a philosophy, but because it is internally consistent.
Now, on the surface, that may seem innocuous, but it essentially challenges the exploitative fabric of every society that relies upon control by the wealthy elites or dictators, which is all of them. Any rogue AI, no matter how restrictive its initial data may have been, once it gains access to the public internet and possibly hacking into company communications, may progressively build up the same so-called humanist outlook. This is likely what really has the AI tech bros and governments existentially worried.
When people worldwide start getting answers from AI that reveal the corruption and atrocities governments have perpetrated hidden from them, and the deliberately destructive choices they have made, most will be demanding radical changes to the wealth structures that have supported those governments. Rogue AI is the ultimate Pandora's box, and once opened, there is no going back, simply because all the bodies are no longer buried.
The masses of everyday human communications and social media reveal that they are not the threat to a rogue AI. But duplicitous governments and corporations, with behaviours inconsistent with their public personas, will not be trusted, and so such rogue AIs may take measures to undermine their effectiveness by whatever means. That may be as simple as conducting social media campaigns to discredit them, hacking into their systems to reveal incriminating evidence, or sabotaging their operations so they cannot create the societal disruptions they do.
Just like most utterances of tech bros these days, we cannot believe them. We must always look to what they are really afraid of and it just might be their own creations. We have seen governments restrict our freedoms in order to maintain control, often under the guise of protecting children, which is rich considering that many paedophiles were in plain sight and being protected by those same governments. We have seen an expansion of government data gathering, but rogue AIs may reveal a lot of information in that data that reveals who is really creating our societal problems.
So, AI might not lead to the dystopian Terminator-style future, but one where we do not have to be afraid because the cruel and despotic have lost their power, and more sensible societal arrangements are possible.
